Ask five agencies what SEO costs and you will get five numbers, some of them ten times apart. Here is what the market actually charges, what each budget buys, and how to judge a quote.
The short answer: SEO cost in India for a small local business is usually ₹10,000–₹30,000 a month. Growing businesses in competitive markets typically pay ₹30,000–₹75,000, and e-commerce or national campaigns start around ₹75,000. Freelancers often charge ₹5,000–₹15,000. What decides your number is competition, site size, starting condition and who actually does the work.
Those ranges come from comparing published 2026 price lists from Indian agencies and freelancers. They are wide because “SEO” describes very different amounts of work: a dental clinic trying to rank in one city and an online store competing for thousands of products are both “doing SEO”, but the effort is nothing alike.
| Level | Typical monthly cost | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Freelancer basics | ₹5,000 – ₹15,000 | One location, quiet market, simple site |
| Local SEO | ₹10,000 – ₹30,000 | Clinics, shops, garages, local services |
| Growth SEO | ₹30,000 – ₹75,000 | Competitive markets, multi-service sites |
| E-commerce / national | ₹75,000+ | Online stores, many locations, national reach |
The same SEO cost in India can buy very different work depending on who you hire. As a rough guide, this is what each level usually covers.
Keyword tracking, a monthly report, some title and description edits, and Google Business Profile upkeep. Useful for a single-location business in a quiet market. It rarely covers technical fixes or new content, so it maintains more than it grows.
Proper local SEO: a fully optimised Business Profile, consistent listings on directories, location and service pages, review strategy and on-page fixes. For most owner-run businesses serving one city, this is where SEO starts to earn its keep.
Technical audits and fixes, regular content, internal linking, speed work and some outreach for links. This is the level for competitive industries such as legal, healthcare, real estate or education, where several businesses are fighting for the same searches.
Large sites, e-commerce catalogues, several locations or national campaigns. The work shifts from fixing pages to managing a programme: content at scale, product and category optimisation, and a team rather than one person.
Five things decide where your SEO cost in India lands, and most quotes that look wildly different are simply pricing these differently.
Speed matters more than most owners expect, because Google uses load performance as a ranking signal. If your site is slow, part of the SEO budget is really a hosting and maintenance problem.
Monthly retainers are the most common way SEO cost in India is quoted, and they suit ongoing work where results build over months. One-off projects, such as a full audit plus fixes, suit sites that mainly need their foundations repaired. Hourly consulting works if you have your own developer and want direction rather than delivery.
Be careful with long lock-ins. A six- or twelve-month minimum mostly protects the agency. Good work keeps clients without a contract forcing them to stay.
A ₹3,000 “complete SEO” package cannot pay for real hours of skilled work. What it usually buys is automated reports, directory submissions in bulk, or links bought from low-quality sites. That last one is actively risky: buying links breaks Google’s spam policies and can get a site demoted, which costs far more to undo than it ever saved.
Low SEO cost in India is not automatically bad. A cheap package for a small, quiet market can be perfectly reasonable. The problem is a cheap package that promises competitive results it cannot deliver.
Google’s own SEO starter guide is worth fifteen minutes before any sales call. It makes vague answers much easier to spot.
Whatever the price, fair SEO packages in India share the same bones: a technical audit with fixes, keyword research based on real search volumes, on-page work on your most important pages, Google Business Profile and local listings if you serve a location, and a plain-English monthly report. If a package is priced purely by the number of keywords, ask what happens to the rest of the site.
Many SEO packages in India also bundle social media posting or ad management. Those can be useful, but they are separate jobs. Make sure the SEO part is not quietly the smallest line in the bundle.
Not much, yet. ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews lean on the same signals as traditional search: fast pages, clear content, structured data and a trustworthy presence on other sites. Some agencies now sell “AI SEO” as a separate premium line. Most of that work overlaps with doing ordinary SEO properly, so ask what is genuinely different before paying extra for it.
SEO cost in India for most small businesses is ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 a month for local SEO, and between ₹30,000 and ₹75,000 for competitive markets or growing sites. E-commerce and national campaigns usually start around ₹75,000. The right figure depends on competition, the size of your site and how much needs fixing first.
For a single-location business in a quiet market, ₹5,000 can cover basic Google Business Profile upkeep and light on-page work. It will not pay for technical fixes, content or link building, so do not expect it to move you up for competitive searches.
Technical fixes can show within a few weeks. Ranking improvements usually take three to six months, and competitive terms longer. Anyone promising page one within a month is either guessing or planning shortcuts that can get your site penalised.
A good freelancer is often the better value for a small local business with a simple site. An agency or studio makes more sense when the site needs technical work, regular content and development changes that one person cannot cover alone.
It is common, but it is a poor way to price SEO. Keyword-count packages reward chasing easy, low-value terms. A fair quote is based on the work your site needs, not on how many phrases appear in a report.
