Thinking about Shopify for e commerce in India? It is one of the quickest ways to get a proper online store live, but a few Indian details (payments, cash on delivery, shipping and GST) work differently from the glossy demos. Here is what is good, what is not, and who it suits.

The short answer: Yes, Shopify is a good choice for most small and mid-sized Indian online stores that want to start selling quickly without managing servers. You get hosting, security, themes and checkout in one monthly plan. The trade-offs are that Shopify Payments is not available in India, so you use a third-party gateway such as Razorpay and pay an extra Shopify transaction fee on lower plans, and GST and shipping need apps or manual setup.
Shopify is a hosted ecommerce platform. You do not buy software or hosting; you rent a complete store system month by month and Shopify keeps the servers, security patches and checkout running.
Servers, SSL, uptime and platform updates are Shopify's job, not yours.
Free and paid themes from the Theme Store, edited with a visual editor.
Reviews, GST invoices, shipping, WhatsApp alerts and more, many with their own monthly fee.
Products, inventory, orders, discounts and customers in one dashboard and a mobile app.
That bundle is the whole appeal of Shopify for ecommerce: you spend your time on products and marketing instead of on servers.
None of these are deal-breakers. They are costs and limits you should know about before you pick a plan, not after.
Most Shopify reviews are written for the US or UK. For Shopify India stores, four things work differently.
Shopify Payments is not offered in India; India does not appear on Shopify's supported countries list. You connect a third-party gateway such as Razorpay, PhonePe PG or Cashfree.
Budget for two feesCOD can be switched on as a manual payment method. It lifts conversions in many categories, but returns-to-origin cost you shipping both ways.
Use with rulesIndian courier aggregators such as Shiprocket connect through apps that sync orders, print labels and push tracking.
App neededShopify's tax guidance puts India under manual tax: you set the rates yourself. GST-compliant invoices with HSN codes are typically handled by an app.

The usual alternative is WordPress with WooCommerce on your own hosting. Our plain guide to WordPress covers how that side works.
For Citizen Bath, my brass bathroom fittings brand, I am building a custom Shopify store rather than using a ready-made template, even though I already run a VPS for my other sites. Shopify handles checkout and hosting, and a custom theme still lets the brand look like itself.

1. How soon do you need to start selling?
2. Who will look after the technical side?
3. What does your catalogue need?
Start on a lower plan, connect an Indian gateway, set up COD rules and a shipping app, and keep the app list short.
You avoid platform fees and get full control, but only if someone reliable maintains hosting, updates and backups.
If your selling logic is unusual, forcing it into apps gets expensive and fragile. A focused custom store may cost less over time.

Every app you install adds code to your storefront and often a monthly bill. Review your app list every quarter and remove what you no longer use.
Yes, for most small and mid-sized stores that want to sell quickly without managing servers. The main India-specific costs are a third-party payment gateway, Shopify's extra transaction fee on lower plans, and apps for GST invoices and shipping.
No. India is not on Shopify's list of countries where Shopify Payments is offered, so Indian stores use third-party gateways such as Razorpay, PhonePe PG or Cashfree.
Yes. Cash on delivery can be enabled as a manual payment method. Many sellers add rules such as order value limits or a small prepaid discount to reduce returns.
Not fully. Shopify's tax guidance places India under manual tax, so you enter your GST rates yourself. GST-compliant invoices with your GSTIN and HSN codes are usually generated with an app.
Shopify is better if you want hosting, security and updates handled for you. WooCommerce has no platform fee and gives full control, but someone has to maintain the hosting, plugins and backups.
Plans are priced in rupees and vary by tier, with an extra fee per order on lower plans when you use a third-party gateway. Our Shopify plans and pricing in India guide breaks down the current figures and the total monthly cost.
