Shared Hosting vs VPS: Which Does Your Business Website Need?

Should you pay more for a VPS for website hosting, or is a shared plan enough? The honest answer depends less on traffic than on two things: what your site runs, and who will look after the server. Here is how to decide without overspending or under-building.

The difference in one picture

The short answer: Shared hosting puts your site on a server with many other accounts and the host manages everything; it suits brochure sites and small WordPress sites. A VPS gives you a guaranteed slice of a server with root access, which suits busy shops, several sites or custom software, but someone has to manage it. Choose a VPS only when shared limits are actually hurting you and you have that someone.

Both run your site on a physical server in a data centre. The difference is how that server is divided up and who is responsible for it.

Shared website hosting

VPS (virtual private server)

On shared hosting a busy neighbour can slow you down. On a VPS your allocation is yours, but so is the job of running it.

If the words "hosting" and "domain" are still fuzzy, start with our basics guide, website hosting in India explained, then come back here.

Which one fits your business

Shared hosting is enough if…
  • You have a brochure site or a small WordPress site
  • Traffic is steady and modest
  • Nobody on your side wants to manage a server
  • The site is built lean, with optimised images and few plugins
A VPS makes sense if…
  • You run a WooCommerce shop with real order volume
  • You host several sites and want them under one roof
  • You need software shared hosts do not allow, such as Python apps, workers or custom caching
  • You have a developer or admin who will maintain it

Notice that "lots of visitors" is not on the VPS list by itself. A well-built site on good shared website hosting can handle more traffic than most small businesses get. A bloated site will struggle on either, and an unmaintained one is a security risk on both; our WordPress plugin security checklist covers the basics.

Signs you have outgrown shared hosting

Resource limit warnings

Your host emails about CPU, memory or process limits, or the panel shows you hitting them regularly.

Slow at busy times only

The site is fine at night but slow during the day or during a sale, even after caching and image fixes.

Checkout or admin timeouts

WooCommerce orders or dashboard pages time out, while simple pages still load.

You need blocked software

A feature needs a background worker, a newer runtime or a server setting the shared plan does not allow.

Before you upgrade, test the site with Google PageSpeed Insights. If the report blames huge images, render-blocking scripts or a heavy theme, a VPS will not fix it. The build is the problem, not the server.

What running a VPS actually involves

Many entry-level VPS plans are self-managed: you get root access and an operating system, and everything after that is on you. These are the jobs that come with it:

  1. Harden the server

Firewall, SSH keys instead of passwords, fail2ban or similar, and no unused services listening.

  2. Install and tune the stack

Web server, PHP or other runtimes, database, caching, and TLS certificates that renew on their own.

  3. Apply updates

Operating system security patches, PHP versions, and every CMS and plugin on every site.

  4. Back up off the server

Automated file and database backups stored somewhere else, and a restore you have actually tested.

  5. Watch it

Uptime checks, disk space, and log alerts, so you hear about a problem before your customers do.

I run around ten sites on a Hostinger VPS with Ubuntu, Nginx and PHP-FPM, and I manage it myself. It is the right choice for me because server work is part of what I do. For a business owner without that skill, the cheap VPS price is not the real price; the real price includes the time or the person needed to keep it safe.

If you want VPS performance without the admin, look for a managed VPS or managed cloud plan, or pay someone to maintain the server. Read our Hostinger review for how one popular host handles this.

What each costs in India

Using Hostinger India as one example, as of November 2026, before 18% GST. Shared plans are from the official web hosting pricing page (48-month term) and VPS plans from the official VPS pricing page (24-month term).

PlanTypeIntro per monthRenewal per month
PremiumShared, 3 sites₹139₹449
UnlimitedShared, unlimited sites (fair usage)₹199₹649
KVM 1VPS, 1 vCPU, 4 GB RAM₹599₹999
KVM 2VPS, 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM₹779₹1,199

Prices change with sales, so check the official pages before buying. On paper the VPS costs a few hundred rupees more a month. In practice the bigger cost is the management work in the section above, whether that is your time or a maintenance retainer.

Compare them over five years, not one month:

–Real average per month
–Price jump at renewal
Intro priceIncludes renewal price

Example: KVM 1 VPS at ₹599 a month for 24 months, then ₹999 a month, costs about ₹59,401 over five years including 18% GST.

Presets use Hostinger India's listed prices as of November 2026, before GST, as one example. Type in any host's prices to compare. It assumes the renewal price applies every month after the intro term.

Three questions, one recommendation

Pick the answer closest to your situation.

1. What does your site run?

2. Who would manage a server?

3. What is hurting right now?

Stay on shared hosting

Pick a reputable host with an India data centre, keep the build lean, and revisit when you hit real limits.

Move to a VPS

A self-managed VPS gives you the most for the money, as long as updates, backups and monitoring are on someone's calendar.

Choose a managed VPS or cloud plan

You need VPS power but not the admin work. Pay for management, from the host or from a developer on a retainer.

Whichever you pick, keep your domain in your own name so you can move hosts freely. Our guide to registering a .in domain explains how.

Frequently asked questions

Is a VPS faster than shared hosting?

Under load, usually yes, because your CPU and RAM are not shared with other accounts. For a small, well-built site with modest traffic, the difference may be hard to notice.

Is shared website hosting safe for a business site?

Yes, with a reputable host. Accounts are separated, and the host handles server security. Most problems come from outdated plugins and weak passwords rather than the hosting type.

Do I need a VPS for website hosting with WordPress?

Not for a typical small WordPress site. Consider a VPS for a busy WooCommerce store, several sites, or when your shared plan keeps hitting resource limits after the site has been optimised.

What is the difference between a managed and unmanaged VPS?

With an unmanaged or self-managed VPS you get root access and handle updates, security and backups yourself. A managed VPS costs more because the host or a provider does that work for you.

Can I move from shared hosting to a VPS later?

Yes. You copy the files and database to the new server, test it, and then point your domain's DNS at it. Done carefully, visitors notice nothing.

How much does a VPS cost in India?

As of November 2026, Hostinger India lists its entry VPS plan, KVM 1, at ₹599 a month on a 24-month term, renewing at ₹999, before GST. Other providers differ, so compare renewal prices and what management is included.
