Website Hosting in India Explained

Buying website hosting in India is confusing mostly because of the jargon: domains, DNS, shared, cloud, VPS, NVMe, renewals. This guide explains what each piece is in plain words, the main hosting types, and what to check before you pay, so you can choose with confidence or ask your developer the right questions.

What is website hosting and domain, in plain words?

The short answer: Website hosting is rented space on a server that stores your website's files and sends them to visitors. A domain is the address (like yourbrand.in) that points visitors to that server. For most Indian small businesses, a reputable shared or cloud plan with an India data centre, clear renewal prices, backups and a GST invoice is the right place to start.

A lot of people search "what is website hosting and domain" because the two are sold together and sound like one thing. They are separate, and you can buy them from different companies.

Domain

Your address on the internet, such as yourbrand.in. You rent it year by year from a registrar.

The address

Hosting

A computer in a data centre, always online, that stores your site's files and database and serves them to visitors.

The building

DNS

The directory that connects the two. It tells browsers which server a domain lives on, and where your email goes.

The signpost

Business email

Addresses like you@yourbrand.in. Often bundled with hosting, but can live on a separate email service.

What happens when someone visits your site

Visitortypes yourbrand.in
DNS lookupfinds the server
Hosting serverbuilds the page
Browsershows your site

If the domain lapses, the signpost disappears. If the hosting lapses, the building closes. Either way, the site is down.

Website hosting types

There are five common website hosting types. Most small businesses only need to choose between the first two or three.

Shared hosting

Many accounts on one server, managed by the host. Cheapest and simplest.

Brochure sites, small WordPress

Cloud or managed hosting

More resources and isolation than basic shared, still managed for you through a control panel.

Growing sites, small shops

VPS

Your own virtual server with root access. Powerful for the price, but someone must manage it.

Busy shops, several sites, custom apps

Dedicated server

A whole physical machine for you. Rarely needed by small businesses.

High-traffic platforms

Platform-hosted

Shopify, Wix and similar include hosting in the monthly fee. You cannot move the site's code elsewhere.

Quick stores, DIY sites

The shared versus VPS question is the one that trips people up most. We cover it in depth, with signs you have outgrown shared hosting, in shared hosting vs VPS. For the platform route, our comparison of Wix vs WordPress vs Squarespace explains the trade-offs.

Choosing website hosting in India: what to check

Most hosting reviews are written for American buyers. For an Indian business a few things matter more:

  1. An India data centre

If your customers are in India, a server in India usually means quicker responses. Many international hosts now offer India as a location; check it is available on your specific plan.

  2. The renewal price, not the intro price

Intro prices often need a long upfront term and can renew at several times the rate. Write down the renewal figure before you compare hosts.

  3. GST and invoices

Hosting prices are often shown before 18% GST. If you are GST-registered, make sure the host issues a proper invoice with your GSTIN so you can claim input credit.

  4. Backups you can restore

Check how often backups run, how long they are kept, and whether restoring is free. Keep your own copy off the host as well.

  5. Payment in rupees

UPI, cards and net banking in INR avoid forex charges and failed renewals on international cards.

  6. Support that answers

Find out whether support is chat, email or phone, and test it with a pre-sales question before you buy.

What hosting costs, and what drives the price

Prices vary widely between hosts, but the structure is similar everywhere. These are the factors that move the number:

What pushes a hosting bill up (relative)

Moving from intro to renewal price
High
Choosing VPS over shared
High
Shorter billing term
Med
Checkout add-ons
Med
18% GST on top
Fixed

Illustrative only, not measured data. Actual impact depends on the host and plan; check each host's official pricing page.

Intro prices hide the real cost. Try the calculator with any host's intro and renewal prices:

Calculator: what you really pay over the years

–Total incl. 18% GST
–Real average per month
–Price jump at renewal
Intro priceIncludes renewal price

Example: Premium at ₹139 a month for 48 months, then ₹449 a month, costs about ₹14,231 over five years including 18% GST.

Presets use Hostinger India's listed prices as of November 2026, before GST, as one example. Type in any host's prices to compare. It assumes the renewal price applies every month after the intro term.

For real numbers from one popular host, our Hostinger review lists its India plans with intro and renewal prices as of November 2026. Hosting is also only one part of the cost of a website; website design cost in India covers the rest.

Common hosting mistakes

Avoid these
  • Letting a developer register the domain or hosting in their own name
  • Choosing a host on the first-year price alone
  • Relying only on the host's backups
  • Using one personal email for every login and renewal notice
  • Buying a VPS when nobody will manage it
  • Blaming hosting for a slow site built on a heavy theme
Do these instead
  • Keep the domain, hosting and DNS accounts in the business's name
  • Compare total cost over three to four years including renewal
  • Keep an off-host copy of files and the database
  • Use a shared role email like admin@ for accounts
  • Start simple and upgrade when real limits appear
  • Test speed with Google PageSpeed Insights before upgrading

The most expensive hosting problem is not a slow server. It is losing access to your own domain or hosting account because someone else controls it. Sort out ownership first.

Which hosting type should you start with?

Find your starting point

Three quick questions.

1. What are you building?

2. How technical is your team?

3. What matters most?

Start with shared hosting

A reputable shared plan with an India data centre is plenty. Upgrade when you hit real limits.

Go for cloud hosting, or a VPS with a manager

More resources and consistency, without running the server yourself unless your developer will.

Use a hosted platform

Shopify or a similar platform includes hosting in the fee. Just check the monthly and app costs.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between website hosting and a domain?

A domain is your website's address, like yourbrand.in. Hosting is the server space where the website's files live. You need both, and DNS settings connect the domain to the hosting.

Can I buy a domain and hosting from different companies?

Yes. Many businesses keep the domain at a registrar and the hosting elsewhere, then point the domain at the host using DNS or nameserver settings. It also makes switching hosts easier.

Which is the best website hosting in India for a small business?

There is no single best host. Look for an India data centre, clear renewal pricing, regular backups, a GST invoice and support you can reach. A reputable shared or cloud plan suits most small business sites.

Is hosting in India better than hosting abroad?

For mostly Indian visitors, a server in India usually gives quicker response times. A content delivery network (CDN) can narrow the gap for sites hosted elsewhere.

What are the main website hosting types?

The main types are shared hosting, cloud or managed hosting, VPS, dedicated servers and platform-hosted builders like Shopify or Wix. Most small businesses start with shared or cloud hosting.

Do I need a VPS for my business website?

Usually not at first. A VPS helps busy shops, groups of sites and custom software, but it needs someone to manage it. Start on shared or cloud hosting and move when you hit real limits.
